GEORG MASSANES

Georg Massanés was born in Germany to a Catalan father and a German mother. His painting is strongly influenced by the philosopher Hegel who states: "The mind produces by itself the work of art, which is the conciliatory link that connects pure thought, nature and finite reality with the unlimited freedom of conceptual thought and emotions." Since his early works in the late eighties, his paintings, whose subject matter resembles that of popular pictorial genres, contain certain codes that when deciphered invoke reflections on the human condition and the sense of beauty.

As a graduate in Art History from the University of Barcelona and a student at the prestigious Escola Massana, Georg Massanés was inspired by conceptualist ideas - especially those referring to the use of materials different from those considered traditional - and a form of artistic expression often conveying political content and calling to question cultural conventions.

Georg Massanés has exhibited in numerous Spanish, German, French and Moroccan galleries and has participated in cultural exchanges with the sponsorship of the Cervantes Institute. He is also the author of several bibliophile books, such as Kynós, based on a sonnet written by the philosopher Agustín García Calvo. His paintings are largely composed in his studio-residence in Montoliu de Segarra, a Catalan village concealed amongst castles and wheat fields.
