GEORG MASSANES
Georg Massanés, born in Germany to a Catalan father and a German mother, presents his works based on a quote by the philosopher Hegel. "The mind produces by itself the work of art, which is the conciliatory link that connects pure thought, nature and finite reality with the unlimited freedom of conceptual thought and emotions." The painter states that since his early works in the late eighties, his paintings, whose subject matter is not far from popular pictorial genres, contain certain codes to be deciphered in order to immerse into "a painting that provokes reflections on the human condition and the sense of beauty."
A graduate in Art History from the University of Barcelona and a student at the prestigious Escola Massana, Georg Massanés was inspired by conceptualist ideas, especially those referring to the use of materials different from those considered traditional, and a form of artistic expression often conveying political content and calling to question cultural conventions. His work emerges from an image, a thought, life experiences and 40 years of reflection on his own work, which are mostly drawings and paintings.
Georg Massanés has exhibited in numerous Spanish, German, French and Moroccan galleries, where he has participated on several occasions in cultural exchanges with the sponsorship of the Cervantes Institute. He is also the author of several bibliophile books, such as Kynós, based on a sonnet by the philosopher Agustín García Calvo. His creativity is largely composed in his studio-residence in Montoliu de Segarra, a Catalan village lost between castles and wheat fields.
